Why is MYGD getting speakers in Ramadan? MYGD also holds a lecture series as part of the Qiyaam experience after Taraweeh at IAGD. These are open to all community members, young and old. In the past, speakers have included Hafidh Ashhar Ali, Dr Ramzi Mohammad, Amjad Tarsin, Tayssir Safi, Shad Siddiqi, and Dr Khatranji.
What will the speakers be talking about? Every year has a different theme for the month. In the past they have included the Great Prophets of the Past, the Khalifah-Rashidun, Great Sahabah, the Great Women of Jannah, and a three week special on Ramadan. Each week a different speaker tackles a different topic from the theme.
What is a Qiyaam? A Qiyaam is a Sunnah (practice) of the Prophet (S). It basically is staying up all night (with a couple hours of sleep in the middle if you want) praying, reading Quran, listening to inspiring stories, and other Islamic activities.
Where will the Qiyaams be held? The brothers’ Qiyaams will be held at IAGD with chaperones over 21 to supervise. The sisters’ Qiyaams are held at private homes of local community members. InshaAllah the addresses of those will be posted soon. Liability waivers may have to be signed by participants.
When will the Qiyaams be held? They are every Friday of Ramadan
What should I bring to a Qiyaam? Suhoor and snacks are provided, so you do not need to bring any food with you. However, it is suggested to bring a blanket and pillow (or sleeping bag) if you want to catch a few hours sleep.
Who can come to a Qiyaam? The Qiyaams are designed for the youth, whether you be in high school, middle school, or college.
Who should I contact for more information? Please contact the Education Chairs, Imaad Zaidi or Mehvish Khan.
